Why Not Read on Your Smartphone?

  • The comprehension of reading on a smartphone is a lot worse.

What is play? Why does play decrease with age?

  • Play is homeostatic regulated. If you are restricted to playing, you will pay more when you can or allowed.  
    • People judge the environment as they grow; therefore, spontaneous play is more likely to happen at a young age. 
  • Personal Play Identity– How you show up in play, and it is developed when you are in a non-playful scenario.
  • Play is about expanding your social roles and increasing your outcomes catalog. 
    • You find out what set of rules to follow, and then you test the contingencies of the rules to see what you can break or not significant.

What is the Personal Play Identity?

  • Gokhan Gunes has coined this term personal play identity. 
  • How you see yourself as being, not just during play 
  • The peronsal play identity is plastic throughout life.Then, You can see how you show up in life.
  • Has three parts: How you play, your personalty, sociocultural environment.
  • 0-25 months old is where your brain is overly connected, and by exploring the world, you develop into who you are as an adult. In addition, exploring the world changes your personal play identity.
  • Personal play identity is plastic throughout the life. 

The Power of the Playful Mindset

  • If you want to remain young for your brain, play is the most powerful to neuroplasticity. 
  • Expanding capabilities through Tinkering.
    • Richard Feynman is a lifelong tinkerer. 
  • Trauma shuts off the play portals. 

What is Effective play?

  • Low stakes and no significant consequences of outcomes. 
  • Low amount of adrenaline (Source).
  • The brain is built to play. Environment and biology are compelling. 
  • One hour of play a week and not have proficiency in that activity and see where it brings you.

  • If the playful activity develops into something you want to learn, then it will be about the performance of the activity. The activity will not be play.

What happens to the brain when you play?

  • The prefrontal cortex can explore more options during play, and you must feel safe to explore.
  • New pathways can be form so that’s why play is the best portal to neuroplsticity
